Grade 5
Activity: Index Cards Towers
(Integrating Math & Science)
Each group will be given a set of index cards. They will be given 8 minutes to create a tall and stable tower. Bonus points will be given to teams who can describe the patterns in their structures, as well as the transformations they applied to the cards (translating & reflecting).
Curriculum Expectations
(Math)
Location & Movement
Grade 5: Create and analyse designs by translating and/or reflecting a shape, or shapes, using a variety of tools
Patterns & Relationships
Grade 5: Extend and create repeating patterns that result from translations, through investigation using a variety of tools.
Geometry & Spatial Sense
Grade 8: Investigate and describe applications of geometric properties in the real world.
(Science)
Understanding Structures & Mechanisms
Grade 5: Identify forces that act on and within structure and mechanisms, and describe the effects of these forces on structures and mechanisms
Grade 7: Design and construct a variety of structures, and investigate the relationship between the design and function of these structures and the forces that act on them.
