York University Teacher Candidates' Action Research/Plan
Why Math Olympics?
The teacher candidates started off by brainstorming activities for the school, which were diverse in nature. It included school clubs to foster charity, science interests, sports, reading, and math. After consultation with the school principal, Mr. Shea, who suggested a Math Olympics, we were instantly intrigued by the idea. Our research on the school continued, and we found that the Math Olympics is included in the school's Improvement Plan. We also looked at the school's past EQAO scores. The scores were above the province's average, therefore having a Math Olympics can encourage students to continue their excellence in math, and allow them to see the discipline as having relevance to our everyday realities.
We are a Catholic School community, therefore we want to promote our faith's core values in this Action Plan. Beyond a love for math, we want students and staff to build a collaborative community of learners, who support and care for each other. The community at St. Agnes is very warm and welcoming to all, and we want to build on these relationships by having an event that can be enjoyed by all. The groups that will be assigned for the Math Olympics can allow students to develop positive relationships with other students who may be in different grades. It will promote team-building, and most important, it will promote important virtues such as kindness, respect, hospitality, love, and many others.
